Southport

Southport is so named because at the time of Queensland’s separation from New South Wales, it was the southern most port of the new colony.

Southport is the main business district of the Gold Coast and boasts a number of attractions for locals, visitors and holiday makers alike.

Australia Fair is one of the Gold Coast’s largest Shopping Centres, it is centrally located to Southport and has over 230 stores. Australia Fair also has a cinema, food court and even a hotel. Southport also has other shopping centres with boutique stores cafes providing a relaxed atmosphere.

Southport has a shoreline that covers nearly 3km of parkland (which is currently under redevelopment) these parklands provide a lovely community area with BBQs, picnic areas and recreational areas aplenty. The redevelopment of the parklands area is intended to reconnect it with the Central business District (CBD), allowing greater access and open it up to more recreational activities.

The Broadwater area of Southport runs the length of the Parklands and affords visitors the opportunity to enjoy a range of water sports such as sailing, waterskiing and jet skiing, and is a fantastic area for these more energetic types of activities. Because the Broadwater is protected in the south by “The Spit” and South Stradbroke Island to the north, these waters are very calm and make for very safe and fun boating activities.

Fishing is also a very popular activity on the Broadwater, shoreline fishing is commonplace or you can hire a small boat and head off into the protected waters just offshore. For the more adventurous, there are Deep Sea Charters available to go after the really big fish.

Southport is also conveniently located close to the Gold Coast’s famous surfing beaches and so is an ideal place to stay if you like to catch a wave. The Gold Coast’s famous Theme Parks are also close at hand which makes another reason Southport is an ideal choice for accommodation on you next Queensland Holiday.
Accommodation of all types is available in Southport, Hostels, apartments and premium hotels are plentiful so you are sure to find something that suits your needs.
