The Strand

The Strand is Townsville’s Main beach strip and is loved by locals and visitors alike. At one end of the beach is the Rock Pool, an enclosed swimming area with trees and grassed areas to relax. The Rock pool café serves delicious fare all day and there is also a childrens playground with a flying fox, swings and climbing bars.The Rock Pool area is also a favourite spot for local anglers, with catches of Yellow Fin, Salmon and Golden Trevally quite common.

A beautiful sea breeze and picturesque Magnetic Island as a backdrop make The Strand a delightful place to spend the day. There are free volleyball nets and the beach is patrolled by Lifesavers, there is also a Cold Rock Ice-cream shop located centrally to the area.

At the other end of The Strand is the water park, built and maintained by Townsville City Council, it is a fantastic place to take the children and adults can have a ball too, the water park has low pressure water canons and a huge bucket that runs on a tipping cycle and dumps water on the assembled throng of willing participants. Nearby there is another children’s playground with numerous swings, seesaws, climbing ropes and monkey bars, a little further along is a large swimming pool as well.

The Strand also plays host to many major public events such as the annual ANZAC Day Memorial Service and street parade where you can watch fantastic old military vehicles and members of the current Australian Defence Force as well as ex-service men and women who have returned from active service.

Another annual event that is well worth attending if you are Visiting Townsville is the New Years Eve celebrations with a fantastic Fireworks display that is accompanied by popular music of the day. There are a number of cafes and restaurants along The Strand as well as bars and nightclubs for entertainment, and not far away is Townsville’s own Jupiter’s Casino where you can have a bet or enjoy a quiet drink in one of their many public areas. Set amongst the beautiful marina, there are gardens and outdoor eating areas to enjoy a meal with a relaxing view.
