Getting to Hamilton Island is easy. It is the only island in the Whitsundays with its own commercial airport, Hamilton Island has direct flights daily from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns, with Virgin Blue, Jetstar, and Qantas. Regional charter flights can also be arranged from Mackay, Proserpine and Airlie Beach. Ferries sail to Hamilton Island throughout the day from Shute Harbour, on the mainland.
If you’re travelling to Hamilton Island from Brisbane, Townsville or Cairns, coaches run to Airlie Beach, which is a short coach trip from Shute Harbour’s ferry jetty. Queensland Rail operates The Sunlander train, which runs four times a week from Brisbane and Cairns to Proserpine, with coach connections to Shute Harbour and the Hamilton Island ferry.
To drive from Brisbane to Shute Harbour is an 1100km trip north from Brisbane and takes around 12 hours non-stop (rest stops and driver changes are recommended). Take the Bruce Highway to Proserpine, then follow the exit to Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour on the coast. Secure parking can be found near the ferry jetty at Shute Harbour.
