Rockhampton might be the beef capitol of Queensland but it appears to have a lot more on offer than cattle.

At least that was the determination of the council on Tuesday; a major events strategy report was brought before council by Rick Palmer, the council’s strategic manager of economic development and tourism.

Initially the proposal seemed fairly straight forward, gain approval to work with Capricorn Tourism on the strategy to promote and market eight events that showed the most tourism potential for the region. The development of these events being expected to create a positive economic impact on the region.

Of course it was when the eight chosen events were named that he encountered problems: Beef Australia, The Central Queensland NRL bid, Queensland Resources Expo, Motormania Central Queensland, Village Festival, Equine Expo, The Capricorn Resort International Golf Tournament and the Yeppoon Triathlon and Beach Fun Run.
On hearing the list of events, councillors identified other events that they thought might be included in the list, Deputy Mayor Rose Swadling asked “What about The Barra Bounty, and The Big River Jazz Festival?”

Cr Graeme Brady suggested a Hot Rod event at the showgrounds in June rather than the CQ NRL bid which he considered it far too early to be promoting. Other councillors championed the Brisbane to Keppel Yacht Race and Rocky Cup.

But Cr Tony Williams wasn’t concerned so much with which events were in and which were out, he was questioning why the council was devoting resources to the issue at all. “Don’t we provide funding to Capricorn Tourism for this purpose?” he asked.

Cr Williams wanted to know how the strategy would be funded, not just in the beginning, but in the long term as well, and said the report was currently in front of council simply didn’t contain enough information for him to make a considered decision.

Mr Palmer will produce a new report for council.
